Are reward apps passive income? Count the attention and data costs
Evaluate background earning claims, permissions, electricity, subscriptions, and actual confirmed payouts.

“Runs in the background” does not mean free, risk-free, or profitable. An app may consume battery, data, storage, attention, or access to information. A displayed balance may still require verification and a minimum before withdrawal.
This guide is a checklist for evaluating a claim. We have not measured background-app income or tested a list of highest earners.
Identify what the company pays for
Ask whether the activity involves market research, device usage data, shopping, playing a game, or another service. If the business model and redemption terms are unclear, do not grant broad access just to see whether it pays.
Playpot’s web rewards require eligible survey, game, or app completions. Leaving its website open, reading articles, or viewing display ads does not generate coins.
Separate costs

A small confirmed reward can be worth less than the attention needed to maintain the app. A large unconfirmed number is not evidence of profit.
A limited trial with an exit rule
If you choose to try a service after checking it, decide in advance what data access and spending you accept. Record a starting balance, run it for a fixed period, then record confirmed rewards and costs. Do not extend the trial merely because an animation shows progress.
For example, $1 of confirmed value after $2 of additional data charges is a $1 loss before valuing time. These are hypothetical inputs, not measured results.
Review permissions
Android’s privacy dashboard can show which permissions apps accessed and when. On iPhone, Privacy & Security includes permission controls and the App Privacy Report. Consult Android’s dashboard guide and Apple’s permission guide.
Deny or revoke access you do not understand. If that makes an offer ineligible, choosing not to participate is a valid outcome. Do not disable device protections to chase a small reward.
When to stop
Stop when terms change, costs exceed rewards, permissions exceed your comfort level, or the service asks for a deposit to release earnings. See our safety checklist.
